Week Three – The Portrait

“A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth. ”

— Richard Avedon

Flickr Commenting Instructions:

Please comment on the work of THREE other students (you do not necessarily have to
comment on each photo) Comments should be written in complete sentences — about three
our four. You might address these key elements:
1) Does it fulfill the assignment
2) Is is technically successful (exposure, color, sharpness)
3) Is it interesting or creative in its composition (layers, peak action, the edges of
the frame, angle of view, depth of field, etc.)

You should be critical but constructive in how you write about the photo — what works,
what doesn’t and what would make it better.
